On Thursday 2nd July 2009, the Department for Social Development launched a consultation paper on the development of a volunteering strategy for Northern Ireland.

The paper, entitled “Join In, Get Involved: Build a Better Future” is available, in a variety of formats, for download from the DSD website.

The consultation runs until 9th October 2009.

There will be a consultation meeting for faith-based organisations on the morning of Tuesday 29th September, hosted by CCWA (NI) and facilitated by the Volunteer Development Agency. Representatives of the Department will also be present. Times and venue will be confirmed as soon as possible.

The Churches’ Community Work Alliance (CCWA) has been working innovatively across the UK to engage churches in community development work since the beginning of the 1990s, and has been active in Northern Ireland since 1991.  In recent years local activists have recognised that Northern Ireland encounters specific issues relating to our local communities.

CCWA (NI) is now being established as an independent and Northern Ireland-focused body.  This will be a locally governed organisation and will set a very local agenda.  This exciting development will be launched at East Belfast Mission on Tuesday, 31 March 2009 at 9.00 am.

On Tuesday 27th January 2009, CCWA (NI) and the Evangelical Alliance hosted an information seminar on the Charities Act (NI) 2008. Approximately 130 representatives of a range of churches and other organisations heard presentations from Denise McCann of NICVA and Seamus Murray of the Department for Social Development. These presentations offered guidance on the implications of the new Act.
